DAVID Greig is feeling his age. "I wrote this play when I was a young man, " this most prolific of playwrights says of his adaptation of Alfred Jarry's Ubu The King, which opens at The Tron this weekend. "I wasn't that far off being a student, and the original play draws on a British comedy tradition that spawned things such as Monty Python and Little Britain, undergraduate student humour and madeup silly words and surrealism.
"It's this great force of energy and language, which I didn't want to sanitise in any way, or to make it mean anything, because I felt that it didn't actually mean anything. It's just this great adolescent, nihilistic f*** off to the audience."See the full content of this document

Greig, one of the most exciting of Scottish writers, is still only in his thirties and this production is significant for him. A joint venture between the Tron, Dundee Rep and The Young Vic company, it will go to the Barbican centre in London as part of BITE 05's Young Genius season.
