HAVING masterminded England's downfall at successive major championships, the Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari now looks set to succeed Sven-Gran Eriksson as national coach as soon as the World Cup finals have been completed. As someone wryly observed, if you can't beat him, employ him.

In a move that has infuriated the pro-British campaigners, the FA have turned their backs on home-grown candidates Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce, Alan Curbishley and Stuart Pearce and, for the second time in six years, have offered a "foreigner" the most prestigious job in the land.
