SEVEN birdwatchers had to be airlifted to safety from a tiny island in the Atlantic after becoming stranded for two days with no food or water.

As midsummer's day temperatures sunk to 15C, the country was lashed by gales and torrential rain while the volunteers were left without shelter when their tents and belongings were blown away.
