Helping a Historic Building Is Not Easy

Summary

IT is sad that it takes the demolition of yet another building by Glasgow's great architect Alexander Greek Thomson to draw attention to weaknesses in legislation ostensibly designed to protect listed buildings. From 2000-02, World Monuments Fund in Britain gave a substantial gift towards the restoration of the tower of Thomson's St Vincent Street Church of (pounds) 392,000 after appearing on WMF's Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites. Due to a lack of progress since then, WMF took the unprecedented step of relisting the church on its 2004 Watch List four years later. This reaffirms the church's world-class architectural significance, and confirms our willingness to work with the city.

The city had not made it easy for us to help this historic building, and we continue to be distressed at the lack of progress since our first financial contribution. The last thing we want is to lose another Greek Thomson building and WMF, along with many other trusts and charities, is ready to bring further assistance to this project if the city would do more to make real some of the promises Councillor Hanzala Malik offers in his letter on June 3.
