AN officially protected quarry containing fossils of international importance could become a dumping ground for industrial waste, with the approval of Scottish Executive-funded heritage bodies.

Trearne quarry, near the village of Gateside in north Ayrshire, has excited palaeontologists by throwing up some of the best- preserved marine fossils in the world that can be seen in situ.
