Living a hundred yards from Gavin Hamilton's house where "Highland Mary" served as a nurse maid, a little further from the site of the Elbow Tavern where Robert Burns and she met secretly in a back room and a mile or so from Failford where they parted, I cannot agree with the statement that little is known about her ("Myths of Burns's mystery muse is exposed", The Herald, March 14) .

It is well known she was born in 1764, the first of eight children, and that her father was the captain of a cutter. She was a servant to a Lochranza minister before becoming a dairy maid to the Montgomery family near Mauchline.
