If the race for the Republican presidential nomination was an Agatha Christie novel, the redoubtable Miss Marple would now be gathering the remaining crew, sans Michelle Bachmann, in a chintz-splattered drawing room to outline her conclusions. The traditional statement, "I expect you are wondering why I have gathered you all here today ..." would be replaced by, "How in the name of Dwight D Eisenhower did you lot get this far?"

Even the fairest of observers would acknowledge the candidates to take on Barack Obama are a remarkable bunch. That's "remarkable, but not in a good way". With not a poor man among them, take your pick between the Mormons (Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman), the twice- divorced guy given to lecturing others on morals, the anti-gay and pro-guns one, the amnesiac one, and Ron Paul, a man who delivered thousands of babies during his career as an obstetrician but whose minimalist attitude to taxation during an economic downturn suggests he was the one born yesterday.
