NEW venues, new repertoire, new series of concerts, new artistic collaborations, a new artistic director, a new sponsor, and a new sense of financial optimism. Little wonder that Heather Duncan, chief executive of the Scottish Ensemble, declares that the current year represents a period of "tremendous change" for the 12strong string ensemble.

The group is coming up forwhat is being called its third "post- BT" season, and its first "post-Clio Gould" season. The former refers to the end of BT's 10-year name sponsorship of the group, which was worth at least GBP100,000 a year, while the latter refers to the fact that violinist Clio Gould, who relinquished her decisive 10-year artistic directorship of the group, is succeeded this year by violinist Jonathan Morton, who is responsible for devising the new season of touring concerts which begins in a fortnight.
