Summary

JAMES Barrowman (Letters, April 8) seems to believe that Scotland is a model democracy in which the elected politicians follow the wishes of an informed electorate. The reality is that if you control a major part of the media you can fool at least a significant minority of the population most of the time.

In Scotland the two most popular tabloids support the Labour Party in a pretty unquestioning way. The BBC's Reporting Scotland and Scottish Television's Scotland Today are tabloid TV, much of their content little more than uncritically presented government handouts, and ministers, when they bother to appear, treated so gently that even the most imbecilic of them can cope. The exception to this infantilism is Newsnight Scotland, a programme from the grown-up world, which is no doubt why it is the object of a constant drizzle of complaint from Labour activists and their unwitting allies in the "London must be best" brigade.
