JENNIFER Cunningham's article on the forthcoming smoke ban in pubs is a fair representation of the views of people who are looking forward to a night out in a smoke-free atmosphere (August 8). Unsurprisingly, given its health and wellbeing focus, it doesn't deal with the concerns of the majority of pub users - who resoundingly backed the licensed trade's proposals for improvement based on ventilation and smoke-free areas.

Groups such as ASH Scotland complain you can't eliminate all smoke particles with ventilation, and in some cases that's possibly technically correct, but you can nevertheless produce an air quality at least as good as, often better than, what you'd find outside.
