* He has been trying all season to win the Flat jockeys' title race, but Richard Hughes, above, suffered a severe blow yesterday when he lost an appeal against a six-day suspension imposed at Wolverhampton last weekend.

Hughes was found guilty of careless riding on Aviso in a division of a handicap. Officials said he manoeuved his mount to the left and caused multiple interference. Hughes admitted to the breach of the rules but was appealing against the severity of the six-day ban.
