LEE McCONNELL, the most successful Scottish athlete of recent seasons, is experimenting with a new event, 400 metres hurdles. Winner of Commonwealth Games silver and European Championship bronze over the f lat 400m in 2002, and a world finalist and Olympic semi- finalist at the distance in the next two seasons, the 26-year-old Glaswegian may even switch for the world championships in Helsinki this summer, though she thinks the learning curve may be too sharp to take in so short a time.

Roger Harkins, her coach, said: "This is the start of a new Olympic cycle, and I certainly expect the hurdles to be Lee's main event by Beijing."
