LABOUR'S own back benchers and the opposition reacted angrily yesterday to the government's rejection of an official watchdog's claim that it is responsible for a vast hole in pension entitlements.

John Hutton, the work and pensions secretary, came under growing pressure to compensate workers who have lost out through their company pensions went bust, including calls from Labour back benchers to increase financial compensation from government funds.
