Summary

JIM Mather, enterprise spokesman for the SNP, said last night he was writing to computer giant IBM's senior management to seek information about its plans for Greenock and reassurances on jobs. His intervention followed an article in The Herald yesterday which highlighted mounting fears that IBM's operations in Renfrewshire could be among the worst-hit by an impending European restructuring at the world's largest provider of computer hardware and services. IBM employs about 2800 people at Greenock. Mather, pictured, said: "I am today writing to IBM's senior management seeking information about their plans and reassurances that Greenock will not suffer particularly badly in any cutbacks. IBM has transformed itself in recent years from a computer builder into a technology services company, and this has been reflected in the changing role of their Scottish plant.

Hopefully, this will help mitigate against job losses."
