BREAKING up the UK's biggest banks would be an error and could hold the sector back from supporting economic growth, the CBI said today, writes Douglas Hamilton.

In a blunt warning to the Independent Commission on Banking (ICB), which is considering a major overhaul of British banks following the recession, the CBI's new director-general, John Cridland, said rather than breaking up the big companies, banks must be strengthened to play a part in financing a private sector-led recovery.
