THE attention which The Herald is giving to the impending crisis in rural health care delivery (Rural GPs in critical condition, July 27) is welcome. I particularly appreciate the reference to implications for communities as well as the individual patient.
GPs of the generation now embarking on careers in rural practice are of the highest calibre - but very few in number. Hardly surprising! The practice of rural medicine in 2004 is a high-wire act, with variety, the rewards of commitment and life in an attractive environment balanced by the pitfalls of long hours, increasing expectations from the public and the threat of litigation.See the full content of this document
