It is very difficult to think of a cultural champion for Scotland to rival Craig Armstrong. His background is working-class Glasgow. By dint of talent and effort he has become, in commercial terms, Scotland's most successful composer. His creative output defies pigeonholing, either in musical or social class terms. He is as happy working in the classical medium as the popular. Directors of the stature of Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge), Luc Besson (Fifth Element), Jan de Bont (Tomb Raider) and Peter Mullen (The Magdalene Sisters) beat a path to his studio door in Glasgow to ask him to compose their film soundtracks.

It was no surprise, then, when James Boyle, chairman of the Scottish Executive's cultural commission, came knocking to ask Mr Armstrong to become one of his commissioners. He has a deep concern for the future of the arts in Scotland and was happy to oblige. However, as The Herald reveals today, he has resigned even before the commission has had its first meeting. A body whose credibility had already been damaged by the executive's decision to downgrade Scottish Opera (thereby pre-empting the commission's work) has now been left reeling on the ropes.
