Summary
THE "world's best" complaint letter that has recently been doing the rounds - from a disgruntled Virgin customer to its boss Sir Richard Branson - had me in stitches. It reminded me of the schadenfreude I get from reading disgruntled reviews on TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel review website. I love the pettiness of the complaints ("My towels were only mildly fluffy"); the polarising mix of good and bad comments; and the fact that no establishment, however grand, can escape scrutiny. I don't know where people find the time to post on it, but thank goodness they do. This is consumer power at its best. I've used it to help plan every holiday in recent memory and I'm sure it's saved me from sleeping in a few downright dumps.
But the site has recently come under intense criticism, not least from hotel owner and entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne. The sharp- tongued Dragon is mounting a campaign against the site (which he calls "cowardly") after he received a review comparing one of his hotels to Fawlty Towers. He believes the site is rife with fraudulent reviews.See the full content of this document
