SCOTLAND'S farmers last year enjoyed their best year in real terms since 1996, according to figures released yesterday by the Scottish Executive.

The total income from farming the measure of profits for the whole industry plus the income to those with a stake in the business, is estimated to have risen by (pounds) 106m, or 29%, to (pounds) 471m. Of that figure, (pounds) 420m was received in subsidies, but last year was also the first time since 1996 that TIFF has exceeded the total level of support to the industry.
