Summary
Allan C Steele is mean-spirited (Letters, October 5). He says the "glittering extravaganza" of Delhi's opening ceremony "sits uneasily in a land where millions barely survive in abject poverty". Is he arguing that major international sporting and cultural events should be held only in countries where nobody lives in poverty? If he is, best we cancel Glasgow 2014 right now.
Mr Steele says he doubts if the "blazered competitors" appreciate the injustices that exist in India. Leaving aside the fact blazers were largely absent from the opening ceremony, he's being very unfair to the athletes. Yes, they're there to compete but I'm sure they'll seize every chance they get to see a little of incredible India - a nation full of colour and life, with great poverty and great wealth, and with an astonishing history and culture.See the full content of this document
