HUNDREDS of British civilians born abroad, who were imprisoned by the Japanese during the second world war, yesterday condemned a decision to pay them just GBP500 compensation.

The one-off payment from the Ministry of Defence falls well short of the GBP10,000 already given to most Japanese PoWs as a "debt of honour" to mark the appalling conditions suffered by internees.
