THE massive investment needed in Scotland's rundown water infrastructure will raise bills and force developers to share the cost of water supply in new sites, the Scottish Executive warned yesterday.

Figures in a new eight-year strategy for the industry suggested the minimum that should be spent between 2006 and 2014 is (pounds) 6.85bn. However, in a worst-case scenario the cost could rise to (pounds) 9.6bn. Around (pounds) 2.2bn of this is needed just to maintain standards.
