ITMAY well be that the Metropolitan Police had no choice but to act on "credible intelligence" and raid that house in Forest Gate in search of a chemical bomb. Had their intelligence been correct, the consequences of police inaction would have been horrific. The media, both broadcast and print, did, however, have a choice. They could have looked at the many examples of high-profile arrests in recent years which resulted ultimately in the "suspects" being released without charge. In the light of this, they could have been more circumspect in their coverage, given that there was a fair chance that it could all come to nothing.

Instead, almost all media outlets abandoned restraint, and filled the weekend papers and news bulletins with apocalyptic stories, most of which have been revealed to have been without foundation.
