WORLD STATUS: Patricia Ferguson, culture minister, visited St Kilda yesterday to commemorate a top accolade for the remote islands. The minister was there to unveil a marker stone commemorating the area becoming the first in the UK to achieve dual World Heritage status. Just 24 places in the world have been given the award and it recognises St Kilda's natural and cultural importance.

The islands are home to rare and endangered species and are also significant as they show how people have lived since prehistoric times.
