Summary

Islay has inspired several new jazz compositions since its annual jazz festival began in the late 1990s. These have been mostly impressionistic in nature, so the music that has resulted from drumming colleagues Stuart Brown and John Hollenbeck's field trip to the "birds and whisky" isle is a departure, as it incorporates the sounds of those twin attractions as essential building blocks and jumping-off points.

Divided into sets by each drummer, Naturally Inspired threw up contrasts in their respective styles and responses to wildlife. The American Hollenbeck's work was very definitely percussive, using speech, electronic rhythms, vibraphone, saxophones and keyboards to replicate bird calls, geese in flight, distillery workings and rainfall. As the set progressed, more and more snatches of melody found their way into the soundscape to the point that Mates for Life, although actually portraying geese choosing partners, ended with a powerful, slightly tipsy tune that might equally have denoted whisky drinkers promising undying loyalty.
