SCOTLAND'S prison population could rise to 10,600 at an additional cost of GBP160m a year to taxpayers if ministers agree that criminals should serve their full sentence.

Cathy Jamieson, the justice minister, has said in an answer to a parliamentary question that the number in jail would rise by between 3000 and 4000 in five to six years if convicted criminals were forced to serve theirwhole sentence.
