James Kerr, a major figure in respiratory medicine in the west of Scotland, has died of myeloma in his 80th year.

He was an able researcher who stimulated many young doctors to investigate various aspects of asthma and allergy. He was also an astute administrator who played a major part in the organisation of medical services m the Western Infirmary group of hospitals, and was the first consultant in charge of the intensive care unit set up in 1967.

James Kerr; Leading Figure in Respiratory Medicine in the West of Scotland

Kerr was born in Largs in 1924. His father later became head gardener of the Southern General Hospital. The family home in his early years was thus in the hospital grounds. He was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School, and Glasgow University from which he graduated MB. ChB in 1947.
