Summary
AN American resident in France with an easy grasp of contemporary sound gizmos, Laurent de Wilde is first and foremost a very fine Fender Rhodes piano player and there aren't really enough of those around. If he has that sound nailed, however, I was less sure about the stuff he surrounds it with. For much of the time it seemed that he doesn't so much embrace technology as invite it along to see how things go, and his sampling gadgetry and beat box and DJ Ben's laptop interventions sat uneasily among the conventional jazz quartet line up - even if they are often the more interesting part of the mix.
You have to assume that the sound mix they had was the one they are aiming for, in which case they should perhaps revise their target, but a more fundamental problem was that the rhythm section often seemed at odds with the project. Jules Bikoko's double bass was occasionally shockingly insensitive and Julien Charlet's drumming an example of someone who knows how to do lots of things but not necessarily why or where. In fairness, we were told he was a bit under the weather.See the full content of this document
