Summary
JEAN Hardie who has died suddenly in Perth, Western Australia, was one of a relatively small number of distinguished women who made their mark on higher education in Scotland in the years of university expansion from the early 1960s.
She came to the fore in her profession in 1964, when it had become apparent that the Scottish College of Commerce would merge with the Royal College of Science and Technology in Glasgow to form the University of Strathclyde. The merger took place in May and one month later, the royal charter was granted to the university - the first to be created in Scotland since Edinburgh University (Jean's alma mater) in 1583. The entire admin staff of the Scottish College joined the small band of academic administrators in the Royal College, Jean among them. She stayed at Strathclyde until her retirement in 1988.See the full content of this document
