When Jerry Douglas, below, talked last week about bringing something different to Celtic Connections he wasn't indulging in idle chatter - he was plotting the rebirth of bluegrass as a musical genre somewhere between Heavy Weather-era Weather Report and Jeff Beck's Who Else! album.
Well, these examples played some of the same notes as bluegrass godfather Bill Monroe, as Douglas mischievously pointed out, and for all that his trio got into grooves and atmospheres half a world, in some cases literally, away from bluegrass's old Kentucky home, Douglas's grounding in the country style that Monroe nurtured and developed still shone through.
