JIMMY Hamilton, the former Labour MP for Bothwell who, during his 23-year parliamentary career turned it into the safest seat in Scotland, has died at the age of 87.
The son of a miner and married to a miner's daughter, Hamilton had a traditional entry into politics. A committed trade unionist, he spent nine years on Lanarkshire County Council before entering parliament in Labour's election victory in 1964. He represented Bothwell until it disappeared in boundary changes in 1983 when he won the new Motherwell North seat with a majority of 17,894 - making it the largest majority in Scotland and the fifthlargest in the UK.See the full content of this document
