CONTRARY to received wisdom, there are things from the 1970s that still sound good, and the songs that Joan Armatrading broke through with are some of them.

It was largely these - songs such as Down to Zero, which opened the concert and Love and Affection, which came much later - that the bulk of this near-capacity audience had come to hear. And Armatrading teased those who shouted for them, letting them know with good humour who was in charge of the running order.
