Summary
John Coultas (Obituary, September 25) was a faithful member of the Roman Catholic Church, which he served with distinction and commitment. Beyond that, he was an ecumenist of the first order. From the foundation of Action of Churches Together in Scotland in 1990 until his illness prevented his regular visits to Scottish Churches House in Dunblane, he was indefatigable in his support of the churches acting together. The Pope had said "hand in hand" at Bellahouston. John Coultas took that to heart. He became convener of the house committee at Scottish Churches House and threw his organising skill into its maintenance and enhancement.
Always friendly to fellow Christians from churches other than his own, he had learned the basic truth of today's followers of Jesus, that since we have one Lord we have a duty to do together all the many things that we can do together. In my nine years as general secretary of Acts, I found John Coultas an ally of weight, warmth and wisdom. His own church has been right to honour him; those of us from other churches who knew John wish to endorse that honouring.See the full content of this document
