JOHN Hughes, former chairman of the Manpower Services Commission in Glasgow and as such, responsible for arranging the training for tens of thousands of teenagers, has died at the age of 87.

John Hughes' career was one of a true Glaswegian. Born in 1918 to typical circumstances in a tenement in Mitchell Street, Rutherglen, son of an ironworker and Lowland mother, he was intensely proud of his humble beginnings. He rose quickly and became captain of the football team, the first dux of Callowf lat School and left school at the age of 15 to enter the workforce of the Glasgow firm of Stewarts & Lloyds.
