Summary
SINCE they first came up with the idea of publishing a long list of contenders as an appetiser for the prize, the Man Booker organisers have unwittingly invoked pity for the judging panel for their unenviable task of guddling in a lucky dip that usually contains little treasure and a great deal of dross.
This year, though, as the judges themselves have remarked, the quality of fiction on offer has been remarkably high.
