It is, he asserts, the key to transforming life chances and releasing young people's potential. Few would disagree with Lord Laidlaw.
What marks him out is his decision to invest an undisclosed sum in Keith Grammar School, the local comprehensive in the Morayshire town where he grew up. The investment will support an initiative undertaken by the school to make more vocational options and experiences available to pupils from fourth to sixth year. It seems likely to involve helping fund courses run in association with the further education sector.
