MARTIN LAIRD moved closer to the world's top 100 yesterday, exactly a year after the last Scottish player dropped out of that hallowed zone.

The last Scot to have the status of a top-100 place was Alastair Forsyth, who lost that status on October 26 last year. It was the first time since the rankings began that the stock of Scottish professional men's golf, which had enjoyed the successes of elite players such as Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance and Colin Montgomerie, had fallen so low.
