IT'S almost certain there will be another bloody showdown in Syria today. "Days of rage," as street protests are often called in the Arab world, invariably take on a special volatility following Friday prayers in the Middle East.

Over the years I've lost count of the times I've seen young Muslims, be they Palestinians, Egyptians or Libyans, take to the streets and frontlines of their respective struggles against occupation and tyranny after a call to action by the Imam during Friday prayers.
