Summary
THIS has been a pig of a year, especially for the PIIGS - Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain - which were hit by the sovereign debt tsunami, which nearly swamped the European Union. Japan was hit by a real tsunami, killing 16,000 and causing a category-seven nuclear disaster at Fukushima. In Britain, inflation topped 5%, the economy lapsed back into near-recession and English cities were set ablaze by the riots. So, no one's going to look back fondly on 2011.
Or are they? The Arab Spring was probably the most important global event of the year and that was, on the whole, very positive. The obnoxious Hosni Mubarak was deposed in Egypt, as was Tunisia's Zine Ben Ali. A popular revolution, backed by British and French air support, destroyed the worst dictator of them all, Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.
