We the undersigned deplore the threat to Modern Languages at the University of Glasgow ("Glasgow University plan to axe courses", The Herald, February 9). The proposal to close down six or seven out of nine language areas will undermine the quality of education in Arts and beyond. It weakens the claim of the university to serve the wider community by producing graduates equipped to function in a globalised world where linguistic and cultural competence are vital.

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Glasgow University has produced graduates with advanced knowledge of the languages and cultures of France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Russia, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Our graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors, building bridges out into the wider world. While student uptake of courses in modern languages has decreased at other universities, at Glasgow recruitment has remained strong. Students in other subjects also benefit from the study of other languages and cultures.
