BRITISH troops should begin a phased withdrawal from Iraq as soon as an Iraqi government has been elected, the Liberal Democrats told the government last night.

Sir Menzies Campbell, the LibDem deputy leader, insisted the UK should not provide any further forces to replace those withdrawn by other coalition members. He told the House of Commons: "I don't believe there should be any question of British forces extending their role and responsibility in Iraq . . . we have made more than an adequate contribution."
