HELEN Liddell's career plans were the source of renewed speculation at Westminster yesterday as reports suggested she was about to be made the next highly-paid British high commissioner to Australia.

Mrs Liddell, who initially told friends she did not want to go to Australia, has made no secret of her ambition to be the UK's next European Union commissioner, but government sources believe she is likely to succeed Alastair Goodlad, the British high commissioner in Australia, saying she was never in the running for Europe.
