A GROUP of Scotland's most famous writers yesterday gave their support to Edinburgh's bid to become the first World City of Literature.

JK Rowling, Dame Muriel Spark, Ian Rankin, and Alexander McCall Smith, all of whom have appeared at this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival, which is sponsored by The Herald and the Sunday Herald, have publicly stated their support for the bid, which is being presented to Unesco, the United Nations' cultural body, this autumn.
