Lower Election Spending Would Help Democracy

THE STATE funding of political parties is not the best solution to the potential corruption and unfairness in the present system. There is a simple alternative. We should have a very low limit allowed on national election expenditure rigorously enforced by the Electoral Commission. This would create a more even playing field for all parties as well as reducing dependence on donors.

Why do parties now need to spend so much at elections? There are free news coverage and free party political broadcasts. Expensive advertising campaigns and phoney photo opportunities detract from, rather than add to, the democratic process. Those parties who can afford lavish expenditure justify it because their opponents are doing the same.
