Thousands of commuters were delayed by more than three hours yesterday after a freight train broke down on the West Coast Main Line.

Forty rush-hour trains travelling from England to Scotland had to be diverted when the freight train broke down outside Ecclefechan, Dumfries at 10.50am, blocking the north-bound line.
