Most people hold these truths to be self-evident: the bankers have landed us in a terrible financial crisis which has created a huge structural deficit; the Government is introducing gigantic cuts in public spending; and because the Conservatives head that Government, the poorest will bear the brunt of the pain. But in reality, in fact, purely as a matter of fact, in actual fact - I stoop to tautology to impress upon you the truth of this point - all three of these statements are hogwash, balderdash, nonsense, drivel, poppycock and piffle: in short, the opposite of the truth.

When we say something is self-evident, we are declaring that it can been seen without reference to proof. Evidence is, literally, what you can see. But as any policeman, reporter or psychologist will tell you, people are often mistaken about what they see, and even more often misunderstand it. If we had trusted what we seem to see and had never tested it, we would still believe the Earth is flat and that the Sun, 32 miles across and 3,000 miles away, revolves around it.
