It is not so long since a rugby league coach would feel about as comfortable in Scotland as a halal butcher at the Vegan Society's annual outing. Even after rugby union's historic, and by then long- overdue, acceptance of professionalism in 1995, a residue of suspicion towards the 13-man code still remained in these parts.
Steve McCormack caught the tail end of it when he took over the job of coaching Scotland's rugby league team eight years ago. Back then, McCormack, who has also done the rounds at a number of English clubs, most recently at Swinton, could at least take comfort from the number of northern accents in his squad, most of the players claiming allegiance to Scotland by way of ancestry rather than birth or upbringing.
