On February 11, 1990, the gates of Victor Verster Prison in South Africa swung open and Nelson Mandela, hand-in-hand with his wife Winnie, walked out into freedom. Yesterday, 20 years later, supporters and admirers of the former president and human rights icon re-enacted that historic walk and chanted a tribute and message of hope for their country: "Viva Mandela!"

Thousands attended the celebrations yesterday at the prison near Cape Town to mark the anniversary of Mandela's release after 27 years in jail as a political prisoner. Standing under a statue of Mandela with his fist raised to the sky, they waved the black, green and gold flags of the African National Congress (ANC) and called out his name.
