MARIA Schell, the Austrianborn actress who became a major star of post-war European cinema in the 1950s and appeared in The Odessa File (1974) and Superman (1978) , has died of pneumonia at home in southern Austria, aged 79.

She was feted by Hollywood after making her mark in British and European films and winning best actress awards at both the Cannes and Venice film festivals. She was preferred to Marilyn Monroe as Yul Brynner's co-star for the 1958 film of The Brothers Karamazov.
