Gerry Atkinson, a chartered builder from Yorkshire, came to Scotland with Bovis 43 years ago to help build some of Glasgow's 1960s monuments such as Queen Street station.

Headhunted by Volvo to build its one-million-square-feet factory at Irvine, Atkinson ended up buying the empty plant himself - and eventually knocking it down - after building something bigger: a haulage, property and construction business that has outlasted Ayrshire's boom years to become one of Scotland's bigger and more successful private companies.
